Beyond basic cosmetic scuffs, you need to evaluate the structural integrity of a deck, check edge health, and ensure safety mechanisms actually function. Knowing what to inspect at the swap, and recognizing when a price tag is too good to be true, is the difference between saving a bundle and wasting money on unsafe, unserviceable gear.

Hardgoods Inspection Checklist
Skis & Snowboards: Base & Edge Condition
Small top-sheet chips are purely cosmetic, but look closely for delamination (where top or bottom layers peel away from the core). Check steel edges for heavy rust pitting, cracks, or compressed sections.
Minor surface scratches are easily fixed with P-Tex fill. Beware of core shots, deep gouges exposing the wood core beneath. If unsealed, water may have seeped into the wood core.
Ensure there is enough metal left on the edges to handle future machine tunes and sharpening.
Verify the mounting insert pattern (4x4, 4x2, or Channels) matches the disc hardware on the bindings you plan to use.
Snowboard Bindings: Sizing, Ratchets & Hardware
Test fit your boot inside the bindings. The heel should sit flush against the hi-back without forcing, and the toe box should overhang evenly on the front without excessive side-to-side play.
Crank down every ratchet strap to ensure the teeth bite securely into the ladder strap. Check that the ratchets release smoothly and don't slip under tension or pop off under load.
Inspect high-stress areas (hi-back heelcups, baseplates, and ankle strap hinges) for stress lines or hairline cracks in the plastic. Ensure the mounting discs and hardware screws are included.
Ski Bindings: The Non-Negotiable "Indemnified List"
Every season, manufacturers publish an indemnified binding list. If a binding is off this list (typically 10–12+ years old), certified techs legally cannot test, adjust, or service it due to liability risk.
Modern ski boots often feature GripWalk soles, requiring GripWalk-compatible or multi-norm bindings (MN/MNC/AT). Standard older alpine bindings will not release safely with GripWalk soles.
Ski & Snowboard Boots: Fit, Liners & Shells
For snowboard boots, make sure the internal liner lacing or harness system cinches down firmly and locks without slipping.
Ask if the liner is heat-moldable (e.g., Intuition or thermomoldable EVA liners). Being able to take a used or past-season boot to a shop to heat-mold the liner significantly improves fit, heel hold, responsiveness, and all-day comfort.
Check plastic shells for deep gouges or stress lines. Inspect the sole tread for heavily worn heels or toes on alpine ski boots which might prevent safe binding engagement, while worn-down snowboard soles lose traction on icy hardpack.
5 Rules for Buying Secondhand Gear
Visit a local shop to learn your exact size, foot width, and appropriate flex profile before heading to a swap.
A $100 pair of used skis or a board needing a $70 base grind, edge sharpen, and wax costs $170 total. Keep in mind the gear and tune-up cost.
Always test your boots directly inside snowboard bindings or on ski binding tracks to verify heel-cup fit, strap length, and boot-sole length (BSL) adjustment ranges.
Check zippers, seam taping, and wear points. A quick spray of DWR restorer (like Nikwax or Granger's) can revive older waterproof jackets.
Never guess ski binding release settings. Take your boots and skis to an authorized shop to have a certified tech test and calibrate the DIN settings.
