All In The Family: How Nub's Nob Operates
Nub's Nob, a Michigan ski resort located between Travers City and Sault Ste. Marie, focuses on family in every aspect of running the slopes. Since 1958 when they first opened, the hill has been family owned and operated. If you're counting that's almost 70 years and the emphasis on family doesn't stop there. Nub's Nob has catered the majority of their programing towards school age children - even scheduling children's programming during their adult race league so that the whole family can be out enjoying the snow at the same time. Affordability is also a forethought for the resort. While companies like Vail Resorts only offer a free season pass to kids 4 and under, Nub's Nob offers free lift tickets for kids 8 and under (with purchase of adult ticket). There's an even sweeter deal for beginners of all ages! The beginner area is free for anyone to use during open hours, this breaks down a massive barrier for entry into snow sports for anyone interested in trying. The only requirement is that users have proper equipment to utilize both the chairlift and conveyor. Something that stuck with me that Brian Boeckl from Nub's Nob shared was "We keep programs and events affordable, because we want families to be involved in the ski area and for them to want to spend their winters here." They really follow through on that sentiment.
Their team also focuses on making the best snow guns possible, that's right, they make their own snow guns! Designed and patented on the property with over 100 across the hill. Because of building snow guns and doing the majority of their infrastructure work in house, Nub's Nob is able to keep a consistent and talented crew some of which have been doing it for decades. "They know your name, they’re experts at their jobs, and that is a powerful combination. You can’t fake a place like Nub’s." (Brian Boeckl) And I for one, cannot wait to visit.
