Colorado Resorts Hit Full Stride With September Festivals, Celebrations
The last gasp of summer plays out in the Colorado mountains during the month of September, with a myriad of festivals, workshops, shows and general good times on the calendar.
At Arapahoe Basin, it's Frisbee time with an annual singles disc golf tournament. Running all day on Sept. 20, the first tee time is at 9 a.m. for all-comers. Pre-registration to select tee time required.
Up at Winter Park, it's the Rocky Mountain Wine Fest on Sept. 19 and 20. First night features food and wine pairings at the mountain base and in town, and the next day's afternoon is all about tasting wines from around the world at the Village.
Grab your paint, brushes and easels and head north for the annual plein air week at Steamboat Art Museum. Watercolor painters from near and far show off techniques, offer instruction and host painting sessions from Sept. 19 to Sept. 26.
Head up the Roaring Fork Valley to Snowmass where dozens of balloons will rise up on the Sept. 12-14 weekend. Liftoff is at 9 a.m. from Brush Creek Park 'n' Ride area.
Out by Grand Junction, Powderhorn Mountain Resort hosts a guided nature tour of the upper terrain of the mountain on Sept. 13. Take a chairlift ride, then join the tour to learn about local geology, wildflowers and trees, even maybe a glimpse of wildlife.
In southwest Colorado, Telluride Mountain Resort is the setting for the annual classic car rendezvous Sept. 25-27. Restored automobiles, trucks, airplanes and motorcycles will be on display in main town, at Village Center base and on surrounding roadways.
Near Durango, Purgatory Resort puts on its annual Marmot Trail Run on Sept. 20. The course is straightforward: Run from base to top and back down, a total of 12 miles in single-track bike paths. Vertical rise is 1,800 feet, registration fee include breakfast burrito and post-race beer.
Finally, in the heart of the southern Rockies, the Crested Butte Film Festival runs Sept. 24-28 for its 15th season. Anchored at the town's art center, the lineup cover some 80 films from all over the world. Receptions, workshops, and lectures fill out the schedule.
