Indy Pass Spring Road Trip Along Lake Superior Mike Terrell calendar_month Sat Mar 01 2025 menu_book 2 minutes reading time (339 words)

Longer days, warming temperatures and still lots of snow along Lake Superior in Minnesota's Arrowhead. It's the perfect recipe for a spring Indy Pass road trip to two of the Heartland's larger ski areas, especially in vertical drop. Scenery from the slopes of Spirit Mountain and Lutsen Mountains is some of the best you will find around the Great Lakes.

The Indy Pass is good for two free days at each resort, plus 25% off the daily rate for a third day. Focusing on independently owned mountains, the Indy Pass is accepted at 59 resorts across U.S. and Canada.

For your spring ski trip this season head for mid-America's mountains instead of western mountains. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois skiers, depending on where you start, it's no more than a day's drive to Duluth for your fist ski area stop. While weekends will be busy this time of year, week days may not be as busy.

Twin City skiers have only about a two-hour drive to Spirit Mountain in Duluth. With its big 700-foot vertical, variety of runs, one of the Midwest’s best terrain parks, and plenty of uphill capacity with a high-speed lift and more regular lifts, it offers jaw-dropping views of the city, harbor and Lake Superior. Night skiing is especially scenic with the city lit up below you. The city of Duluth offers many lodging, dining choices and nightly entertainment along the nearby waterfront.

It's a two-hour drive north on Highway 61, made famous by Bob Dylan who grew up near Lutsen Mountains. The ski resort offers 95 runs, the longest two miles, that fall off four mountain tops. The ancient Sawtooth Mountain chain rises over 1,000 feet above Lake Superior, often in sight on many runs. The ski area offers over 800 feet of vertical drop. Their season typically runs from early November into mid-April and weekends into May. It's true mountain skiing and they also have mid-America's only gondola.. There are a variety of lodging and dining choices at the resort and nearby.
