Meltdown in the Midwest: Closing Dates and Festivities Krista Holden calendar_month Tue Mar 24 2026 menu_book 2 minutes reading time (262 words)

After two years lacking snowfall across the midwest region, we finally had an average to above average season depending on exact location. Michigan's Nub's Nob has had 166 inches of snow, with their yearly average being 140 inches, the lake effect from the Great Lakes delivered this season! But sadly (or not depending on how much you love summer) the temps are rising, snow is melting, and spring is here.

Ski areas in the Twin Cities area have announced their closing dates and closed after this past weekend including Afton Alps and Hyland Hills Ski Area. Others are holding on for this coming weekend including Trollhaugen and Spirit Mountain. But due to a great snow year many resorts are planning to make it through the first weekend in April and that long list includes Giants Ridge, Crystal Mountain Resort, Granite Peak Resort, and Nub's Nob. On April 4th Granite Peak is hosting a party of their own which features a 100 foot long pond skim and Red Bull Jib Jam all while listening to live music and DJs. Lutsen Mountain will follow suit after them, April 12th, hosting "Mountain Meltdown" with live music three days in a row at different locations through out the resort.

I don't know if I have ever had the best snow of the season riding at my home resorts in the Midwest, but this year that was the case without question. I am already excited for next year and going to make the most of what spring condition riding we have left the next couple weeks!
