West Virginia Ski Areas Are Firing Thanks To Snowfall And Cold Temperatures
Country roads, take me home. To the slopes, where I belong.
That’s not exactly what John Denver had in mind when he wrote the song Country Roads, but the way snow is falling in West Virginia right now, it certainly could have.
The snowfall and cold temperatures that have hammered the East Coast have been extremely kind to West Virginia. So much so, that Governor Patrick Morrisey held a press conference with local officials at Winterplace Ski Resort to say so back in December.
The West Virginia Ski Areas Association is reporting the best conditions in recent memory.
Winterplace General Manager Josh Faber told local ABC station WOAY reporter Caleb Pearl that he couldn’t wait to get out on the hill after his interview earlier this week.
“We’ve had ton of natural snow, more than last year this time. Conditions are great, temperatures are actually going to warm up a little bit which is good because it’s been a bit chilly, and it’s going to be a fun month for sure,” “You know we’ve had consistent temperatures, right? So we haven’t had those warm temperatures during the day when it melts during the day and at night it freezes…we haven’t had those. It’s just been cold, so when it’s just been cold, conditions are great.”
Winterplace has 27 of 28 trails open and 8 of 11 lifts spinning. Meanwhile up the road at Snowshoe, they have 10 of 13 lifts spinning and 58 of 61 trails open. Timberline Mountain is 100% open, both where trails and lifts are concerned.
These fantastic conditions will pay dividends into March, if all goes according to plan. Last year, Snowshoe’s closing day was March 23, 2025, which was consistent with previous years, but still earlier than many skiers in the south would care for. Right now, closing day is scheduled for March 22, but hopefully with these conditions, that will be pushed back, perhaps even into early April.
